And the Band Played On... I thought it was bad when I lost 16% of my savings. But then, the numbers kept falling.
So here's a lovely chicken lunch.
In today’s issue…

We have a lot to unpack today, friends, and you will be pleased to know that nearly all of it is to celebrate joy. Tougher to do these days, but I’m a firm believer in not letting the bastards grind you down.
It’s weird to write a newsletter about eating and drinking and having a good time, when things currently, decidedly, emphatically, do not feel like a good time. And I am not just talking about the White Lotus finale.
I’m talking about the whole season. No, I’m not. I won’t. I can’t.
(But season 3 totally sucked, right?)
Anyway, big-budget television flame-outs aside, I initially thought about ignoring the other thing… you know the one. The whole, despot chaos/savings evaporating so billionaires can scoop up the wreckage for cheap into thin air thing… ignoring it all seems reasonable and quite possibly the sanest thing I can do. But then, reflecting upon my savings annihilation over a gigantic gin and tonic, I realized I should probably say something.
And then, on my second gigantic gin and tonic, I thought, it’s probably better if I say nothing, but instead assemble some people way smarter than me to say quite a lot and inspire even more.
So, before we get into a spectacular spring lunch you absolutely should enjoy with your favourite people gathered around your table, I should let you know about a little event I’m hosting.
Wine, Women & Wealth is on April 24 at Vantage Venues downtown Toronto.
(Despite the title, it’s open to anyone who likes money and who likes wine, but calling it Wine, Women, and Men, and Non-Binary & Wealth, didn’t have the catchy ring I was after.)
I’ve invited a powerhouse lineup of financial experts for a candid, no-nonsense discussion about taking control of our wealth and our financial futures. So whether you're looking to fix what’s not working, lock in what is, or prepare for whatever comes next, this is your chance to get real about your money and walk away with a game plan.
I hope you will join us.
Onward…
I was listening to
on the Desert Island Dishes podcast with . Nicola was saying one of her easy weeknight dinners – fried cabbage with an egg or maybe some rice – is also one she proudly serves to friends when they come by for dinner.I cheered out loud (an excellent tactic when you want a seat on the subway all to yourself.)
I have long maintained that while you certainly want guests to feel welcomed and looked after, you don’t have to sweat out an eight-course menu for days before their arrival. I argue, all the time, your friends and family will probably be more happy with a comforting stew or a barbecued burger than having to stand on ceremony waiting for the amuse bouche to be cleared.
(Although my bouche always loves to be amused. Here are 10 fast and easy snacks to pull together in minutes.)
