I’m having an … interesting … hair day.
It desperately needs to be washed after a full weekend (<cough> plus a few days) of fun in the sun and chlorinated water.
But I have an event to go to tomorrow which requires fresh hair, and if I wash it today, then tomorrow’s hair washing is out of sync. And if I wash it too much then it looks too flat.
See my dilemma? Am I the only one who has these problems?
Only Mad Dogs and Englishmen…
My hair and I spent the morning rearranging the lanai to cast the sun-loving plants in further into the spotlight, and retreat the ones that are partial to shade in the darker corners.
The heat has finally come for Toronto; it will feel like up to 35°C for most of the week and the weekend is reported to feel more like 43°C. (If you’re a Fahrenheit person, I Googled it for you; that’s about 110 degrees.)
I’m slightly panicky about this turn of events. Yes, I wanted it warm, even hot, but 43 degrees seems uncivilized.
Without a doubt you will find me hunkered down at the Henderson Compound, where a pool and generously shaded gazebo await.
Today…
In light of this scorching turn of events, I’m sharing my easy go-to menu for summer days by the pool (or lake.)
It’s the one I turn to at the start of summer, when the sun and warmth is such a novelty I’m loathe to miss a minute of it cooped up in the kitchen.
It’s the one I turn to later in the season, after the novelty of the heat and humidity has worn off; when I truly perish at the thought of standing near an alight oven.
The joy of this all-day feast is it celebrates summer in its simplicity. Or complexity, if you would rather. It’s a choose-your-own-adventure of culinary bliss.
From a simple, elegant, and nourishing lunch (my dad calls it, “very European” 😁❤️ ) to quenching afternoon snacks, followed by a quick and light apéro, and finally a satisfying al fresco dinner, this all-day menu is brilliant for living-is-easy delight.
