I lit the candles this morning for coffee. I lit them last night for cocktails.
This ritual has been happening for the last month or so, since the days began shortening at alarming speed.
Candles, coffee, and cocktails. This is not a bad daily rhythm.
I’ve always been a homebody, but cold and dark evenings make me cling firmly to the boundaries of my dwelling. The days of carefree cocktail parties pool or lakeside have been replaced by living room apéro with blankets, soft lighting, and three finger pours of hygge.
Around the time that others flip their wardrobes from summer to winter, I flip my bar.
Due to my rebellious Aquarian ways, I’m not one to subscribe to the “rosé and gin in summer” and, “red and whisky in winter” mantras, but I do lean more to the richer cocktails when the wind howls.
Below I’ve outlined four of my favourite drinks for cold weather entertaining, and also included a list of items needed for a properly stocked winter bar. And yes, there’s recipes, too.
Free Tickets to “Conclave” starring Stanley Tucci
Before we get on with it, I’m giving away THREE pairs of tickets to Conclave, the new papal thriller starring Stanley Tucci, Ralph Fiennes, Isabella Rossellini, Carlos Diehz, and John Lithgow.
This giveaway is for paid members in Canada only and tickets can be used at any Cineplex (sorry to everyone living somewhere else!)
If you are considering upgrading your subscription, now might be a good time, as a pair of tickets is worth up to $30 which is equivalent to half a year’s membership.(depending on the day of the week, where you live, and I’m sure other deals and discounts, etc., etc.)
I will make the draw randomly from the list of paid members and announce winners in this Saturday’s Weekender.
My Four Favourite Cold Weather Cocktails
This is not to say I only drink these four exclusively from November to March. But these are the heavy hitters in my bar arsenal, and I always have the ingredients needed in ample supply.
